Showers of Titus, a Vertical Spa in Rome

Designed in collaboration with Mandy LeBoeuf, The Spa is carved into the site of the ruined and buried baths of Titus. It takes cues from the Trevi Fountain and Rome’s historic infrastructure, a marriage of art and technology, powered by the hydraulic pressure provided by topography. In this case of extreme vertical rise, the pressure from the high tank will power the water to the individual pools and steam rooms large and small. In a series of large drops, including a 60 meter drop from the heated pool to the short-course pool, water’s energy will be harnessed through turbines, pumping the site’s water to the top tank, renewing the cycle. The building serves as a living sculptural fountain, a calibrated, formal flow of water that recalls the heights of Rome’s Baroque optimism with today’s technological possibilities.
